How to Handle Problems with Braces or Invisalign

Is It an Emergency or Just an Inconvenience?

Most orthodontic issues can be managed temporarily at home and handled at your next visit. However, you should contact us promptly if:

  • You have severe pain that doesn’t improve with over-the-counter pain medication.
  • You experience trauma to your teeth, mouth or face.
  • You lose a large piece of an appliance or it seems like you could swallow it.
  • A wire or appliance is causing significant discomfort that you cannot relieve at home.

For injuries involving possible broken bones or heavy bleeding, seek urgent medical care or visit the emergency room first, then contact us for follow-up orthodontic care.

Common Orthodontic Problems & Home Solutions

1. Poking or Long Wire

A wire may occasionally slide and become too long, irritating the cheek or gums. To relieve this:

  • Dry the area with a tissue.
  • Apply a small ball of orthodontic wax over the end of the wire.
  • If you are able and comfortable, use sterilized nail clippers to carefully trim the very end of the wire.

Then, call our Orland Park office so we can adjust the wire if needed.

2. Loose Bracket

A bracket can loosen if it is bumped or if you bite into something very hard or sticky. If this happens:

  • If the bracket is still on the wire, gently move it back into position and place wax over it if it bothers you.
  • If it comes off completely, put it in a small container and bring it with you to your next visit.
  • Call our office to let us know; we’ll tell you whether you should come in sooner.

A loose bracket is rarely an emergency, but fixing it promptly helps keep your treatment on schedule.

3. Loose Band, Expander or Other Appliance

If a band around a molar or an appliance like an expander becomes loose:

  • Do not try to remove it on your own.
  • Cover sharp edges with wax if needed for comfort.
  • Call Othman Orthodontics in Orland Park to schedule a repair appointment.

4. General Soreness After Adjustments or New Aligners

Some soreness is normal after braces are placed or adjusted, or after starting a new set of aligners. To ease discomfort:

  • Eat soft foods (soups, yogurt, pasta, smoothies) for a couple of days.
  • Use over-the-counter pain relief as recommended by your doctor.
  • Rinse with warm salt water to soothe irritated gums.

This type of soreness usually improves within a few days and is not considered an emergency.

5. Irritation from Brackets, Wires or Aligners

If a bracket, wire or aligner edge is rubbing the inside of your cheeks or lips:

  • Dry the area and apply orthodontic wax over the offending bracket or wire.
  • Wear wax as needed until your mouth adjusts or until we can make an adjustment.
  • Call us if the irritation is severe or if sores are not healing.

6. Lost or Damaged Clear Aligner

If you misplace or break an Invisalign or clear aligner:

  • If you were near the end of the wear time for that aligner, you may move to the next one and call us.
  • If you had just started a new aligner, put the previous one back in and contact us.
  • Do not skip multiple aligners without instructions from our office.

We’ll let you know whether we need to order a replacement or modify your aligner schedule.

7. Swallowing or Inhaling Part of an Appliance

If you suspect a piece of an appliance has been inhaled or if you have trouble breathing:

  • Call emergency services or go to the emergency room immediately.
  • Once you’re safe, contact us so we can repair your braces or appliance.

How to Prevent Orthodontic Emergencies

You can reduce the risk of problems by:

  • Avoiding sticky candies, nuts, ice and other hard foods that break brackets and wires.
  • Wearing a mouthguard during sports and physical activities.
  • Following instructions for turning expanders and caring for appliances.
  • Keeping regular appointments so we can catch small issues before they become bigger ones.
