Braces Timeline: What Happens Month by Month?
Braces Timeline: What Happens Month by Month?
One of the biggest questions we hear at Othman Orthodontics in Lombard and Orland Park, IL is:
“How long will braces take—and what happens at each stage?”
While every smile is unique, there are common phases most patients go through. This guide walks you through a typical braces timeline from your first consultation to the day your braces come off.
Before Braces: Consultation & Planning
Step 1: Orthodontic Consultation
Your journey begins with an orthodontic consultation where we:
- Review your medical and dental history.
- Examine your teeth, bite and jaw alignment.
- Discuss your concerns and goals.
- Explain potential treatment options (braces, Invisalign, etc.).
If braces are recommended, we’ll outline a preliminary treatment plan and approximate length of treatment.
Step 2: Records & Final Treatment Plan
At a records appointment, we gather detailed information:
- Photos of your face and teeth.
- Digital X-rays to see roots, jaws and developing teeth.
- Scans or impressions to create 3D models of your teeth.
Using these, we finalize your treatment plan, including:
- Which teeth need to move and how.
- Whether bite correction or extra appliances are needed.
- Estimated treatment time and cost.
Month 0: Getting Braces On
On “braces day,” we:
- Clean and dry your teeth.
- Place brackets on each tooth with a special adhesive.
- Position and secure the archwire into the brackets.
- Add colored or clear elastics to hold the wire in place.
The appointment usually takes about 1–2 hours. Your teeth may feel tight or sore later that day and for a few days after.
Month 1–2: Getting Used to Braces
In the first couple months:
- Your teeth begin their first small movements.
- You get used to eating with braces (soft foods help at first).
- You learn new brushing and flossing techniques.
We’ll typically see you about every 6–8 weeks for adjustments, where we:
- Check your progress.
- Tighten or change wires.
- Adjust elastics or add new ones as needed.
Month 3–6: Visible Changes
By now, many patients start to notice their teeth:
- Looking straighter in photos.
- Feeling more aligned when they bite.
During this phase, adjustments focus on:
- Aligning the front teeth and reducing crowding or spacing.
- Ensuring teeth follow the planned path of movement.
Some patients may:
- Receive light rubber bands (elastics) to help guide the bite.
- Need small changes to wires or brackets to fine-tune movement.
Month 6–12: Bite Correction & Fine-Tuning
In this phase, we focus more on how your upper and lower teeth fit together.
Depending on your case, this may include:
- More consistent wear of elastics to adjust overbite, underbite or crossbite.
- Using springs or other small appliances for specific tooth movements.
- Refining arch forms (the shape of your dental arches) for function and esthetics.
This is also when oral hygiene is extra important—because you’re far enough into treatment that plaque can build up if brushing and flossing are rushed.
Month 12–18+: Final Adjustments & Detailing
As treatment progresses, changes become more detailed and subtle. We:
- Adjust individual tooth positions for ideal alignment.
- Refine your smile arc (how your upper teeth follow your lip line).
- Ensure back teeth fit together comfortably for chewing.
Not every case takes the same time—some finish around 12–18 months, while complex cases may take longer. We’ll review progress regularly and update your expected removal date.
Before Braces Come Off: The “Finishing” Phase
As we get closer to the end:
- We confirm that your goals and bite corrections are achieved.
- We check root positions with updated X-rays if needed.
- We plan your debonding (braces removal) appointment.
We’ll also talk about retainers and life after braces so you know what to expect next.
Braces Off Day: Debonding
The big day! At this appointment:
- We remove brackets and wires.
- We clean off any adhesive and polish your teeth.
- We take new photos and impressions or scans for retainers.
Many patients are surprised at how smooth their teeth feel and how different their smile looks compared to before.
After Braces: Retainers & Long-Term Maintenance
Although your braces are off, your teeth are still stabilizing. You’ll:
- Wear retainers as instructed (often full-time at first, then at night).
- See us for follow-up visits to monitor your bite and retainers.
This phase protects the time and effort you invested in treatment.
How Long Do Braces Take Overall?
While it depends on many factors, typical braces treatment ranges from:
- 12–18 months for simpler cases.
- 18–24+ months for more complex crowding, spacing or bite issues.
At your consultation, we’ll give you an estimate based on your specific needs and update you if that changes.
