Braces & Diet: What to Eat the First Week & Beyond

The day you get your braces on is a big step toward a healthier, straighter smile. But it also comes with one of the most common questions we hear at Othman Orthodontics:

“What can I eat now that I have braces?”

Whether you’re a parent of a child starting braces with colors or an adult beginning clear braces, knowing what to eat (and what to avoid) will make your first week and the rest of treatment much easier.

In this guide, we’ll cover:

  • What to expect the first few days with braces
  • Soft foods that are comfortable and braces-friendly
  • Foods to avoid with braces
  • Healthy snack ideas for kids, teens and adults
  • How to handle eating out, school lunches and special occasions

The First 24–72 Hours With Braces

After braces are placed or adjusted, it’s normal to feel:

  • Pressure or tightness on your teeth.
  • Mild soreness or tenderness when biting.
  • Sensitivity to chewing harder foods.

This usually improves within a few days. During this time, choosing soft, easy-to-chew foods helps you stay comfortable.

Soft Food Ideas for the First Few Days

  • Yogurt and smoothies (avoid using a straw too forcefully).
  • Mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, oatmeal and soft pancakes.
  • Applesauce, ripe bananas and very soft fruit pieces.
  • Pasta, macaroni and cheese, soft rice dishes.
  • Soups (not too hot), stews with very tender ingredients.

If you’re unsure about a food, ask: “Can I easily mash this with a fork?” If yes, it’s usually safe the first few days.

Foods to Avoid With Braces

Some foods can bend wires, break brackets or get stuck, increasing the chance of emergencies and slowing down treatment.

Hard Foods

  • Hard candies, lollipops.
  • Ice cubes (chewing ice is a big no).
  • Hard nuts (whole almonds, peanuts, etc.).
  • Crunchy chips or very hard taco shells.
  • Whole raw carrots or apples (unless cut into small, bite-sized pieces).

Sticky & Chewy Foods

  • Caramel, taffy, gummy candies.
  • Chewy, sticky granola bars or fruit leathers.
  • Very sticky peanut butter or candy bars full of caramel and nuts.

“Biting Into” Foods

Avoid biting into foods with your front teeth such as:

  • Whole apples or pears (cut them into slices instead).
  • Corn on the cob (cut kernels off the cob first).
  • Whole crusty rolls, bagels or thick pizza crusts.

These can put too much pressure on front brackets and cause them to loosen.

Braces-Friendly Meals & Snacks

Breakfast Ideas

  • Soft scrambled eggs with cheese.
  • Yogurt with soft berries (avoid very crunchy granola).
  • French toast or pancakes (not overly chewy).
  • Oatmeal or cream of wheat with fruit.

Lunch & Dinner Ideas

  • Soft pasta dishes (spaghetti, macaroni, ravioli).
  • Tender chicken or fish cut into small pieces.
  • Rice bowls with soft vegetables and protein.
  • Soft casseroles, chili and stews.
  • Sandwiches on soft bread (no thick crusts or hard rolls).

Snack Ideas

  • Cheese cubes or string cheese.
  • Hummus with soft pita or very soft veggie sticks.
  • Ripe bananas, soft berries, sliced peaches or pears.
  • Yogurt, smoothies, pudding and applesauce.

Braces & Healthy Choices

It’s tempting to lean on soft sweets when your teeth feel sore. But for long-term oral health, we recommend:

  • Limiting sugary drinks (soda, sweet tea, sports drinks).
  • Keeping desserts as occasional treats, not daily habits.
  • Rinsing with water and brushing after meals and snacks.

Remember: with braces, plaque can stick more easily around brackets and wires. Combining sugary snacks with poor brushing is the fastest way to get white spots or cavities.

Eating at School, Work & Restaurants

School Lunch Tips

  • Pack braces-friendly options like pasta, rice dishes, yogurt and soft fruit.
  • Avoid hard chips and chewy treats that can break brackets.
  • Encourage kids to drink water instead of sugary drinks whenever possible.

Work Lunch & Eating Out

  • Choose softer options like soups, rice bowls, pasta or soft grilled fish/chicken.
  • Skip very crunchy salads with hard toppings (nuts, croutons) or ask to have them on the side.
  • Cut food into smaller pieces to reduce pressure when biting.

Special Occasions: Parties, Holidays & Treats

Braces shouldn’t mean missing out on celebrations. With a few adjustments, you can still enjoy:

  • Birthday cake (just watch out for hard decorations).
  • Ice cream, soft cookies, brownies.
  • Holiday meals—focus on softer dishes and cut tougher foods into small bites.

If you do indulge in sweets:

  • Drink water afterward.
  • Brush your teeth as soon as you can.

What About Invisalign & Diet?

If you are wearing Invisalign or Invisalign Teen instead of braces:

  • You can eat most of your usual foods because you remove aligners to eat.
  • You still need to avoid chewing on aligners (no eating with them in).
  • You should brush before placing aligners back in to avoid trapping sugars against your teeth.

The main “diet rule” with Invisalign is actually a time rule: wear aligners 20–22 hours per day, so snacking less often can help.
